PILPEL was founded in the spirit of igniting conversation. Its name, drawn from the Hebrew term pilpul—meaning “rabbinic spicy debate”—expresses a clear vocation for lively, passionate, and deep exchanges of ideas.

The publishing house is grounded in the conviction that Jewish thought, with its long tradition of questioning, nuance, fertile disagreement, and love of debate, can offer the world that intellectual “spice” which awakens minds and resists comfortable truths.

PILPEL believes that debate is not about division, but about encounter; that disagreement can be a refined form of respect; and that ideas can be confronted with intensity, rigor, and passion without ever losing sight of peaceful coexistence.

In a world often tempted by silence or violence, PILPEL chooses the living word, spirited dialogue, and the collective construction of meaning.
